Why do you need a screen saver?

Screen savers prevent phosphor damage that occurs when computer monitors are displaying the same image, without changing the display. Damaged black and white monitors tend to show the inactive image burned into the screen. Distortion of color values may occur after periods of inactivity in color monitors.

Why do you need a screen saver if you have a EnergyStar monitor?

EnergyStar monitors are excellent at reducing energy consumption. They turn off by themselves after a specific amount of time, doing exactly what a screen saver is suppose to do. However, switching the monitors on and off constantly tends to wear out the monitors prematurely. Of course, monitors built to the EnergyStar specification generally have a longer life-span. But you can keep your monitors working even longer if you set the switch off time higher, and use a screen saver for short breaks.
